Hey, America! You’re special in God’s eyes. At least according to yourselves. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is rolling its collective eyeballs. Here’s some stuff people were linking to on Twitter yesterday:
- Relevant Magazine posted a Lifeway survey result that 53% of Americans think God is special.
- Warren Throckmorton posted an I-told-you-so about Glenn Beck’s appearance at Ed Young’s church, where he postulated the Mormon doctrine that the U.S. has special covenant relationship with God. (I have to pause here and note that out of all the various orthodox Christian pastors and authors, obviously there was no one else available as a summer guest speaker.)
- Throckmorton also included a link to a 2014 piece at Christ and Pop Culture, critiquing the Mike Huckabee doctrine that America has a special place in God’s plan.
As one person Tweeted, America is special “In my humble opinion, no more so than Canada, Monaco or Luxembourg. The U.S. exists at God’s pleasure and providence, but not like ancient Israel.”
Journalistically speaking these concepts are a whitewash. They say things that I am sure America wants to hear, but the ideas don’t hold up under the microscope of either history or theology.
