Louis Giglio to be Replaced for Obama Inauguration Prayer

Louis Giglio

Well… that was short lived.  Fifteen minutes of fame, as it were.  But what do I know? As a Canadian, I still don’t get why a U.S. president elected to a second term even has an inauguration ceremony. Here it’s more like going to the front desk of a hotel and letting them know you’re staying an extra night. But Passion Ministries’ Louis Giglio won’t be doing the closing prayer in Washington, DC after all, as NBC reports.

A pastor chosen by President Obama to deliver the inaugural benediction later this month has withdrawn amid controversy over anti-gay remarks he made more than a decade ago.

In a mid-1990s sermon, Rev. Louie Giglio, an Atlanta minister and founder of the Passion Conferences, a group dedicated to uniting students in worship and prayer, advocated for “ex-gay” therapy and urged listeners to prevent the “homosexual lifestyle” from becoming accepted.

He also invoked a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people to be executed and argued that homosexuals choose to be gay.

There are also other links to aspects of this story at CT LiveBlog:

… In a statement on the Passion City Church website … Giglio stated: “Though I was invited by the President of the United States to pray at his upcoming inauguration, after conversations between our team and the White House I am no longer serving in that role. … The issue of homosexuality (which a particular message of mine some 20 years ago addressed) is one of the most difficult our nation will navigate. However, individuals’ rights of freedom, and the collective right to hold differing views on any subject is a critical balance we, as a people, must recover and preserve.”
