Blogroll Update #8

This is actually one of the best supplements I’ve ever done simply because it contains updated links to some longtime favorites of mine, some great writers that we use at Christianity 201, and some things I discovered simply had never appeared here before.  This time around I’ve listed previous blogrolls at the bottom! There’s probably well over a thousand in there, maybe more.

Blogroll Update # 5

It’s been a full year since we last ran an update of some of the Christian blogs I’ve bookmarked in my computer. The blogroll that appears daily here is only a small part of the sites I have visited or used in the compilation of the weekly link list and includes some well-known writers and some obscure ones.

close-to-home-on-blogging1Here’s the link to part one. (The really big one from almost two years ago.)

Here’s the link to part two. (Sixteen months ago.)

Here’s the link to part three. (14 months ago, includes my news sources.)

And here is the link to part four. (One year ago, includes blog aggregators and people who do things similar to the Wednesday Link List)

Feel free to use the comments to make suggestions for others I should consider, but check the other lists — use your computer’s ‘find’ feature — to make sure they haven’t already appeared here.

Note: If you find something here where nothing has been posted for six months, let me know and I’ll delete it. Also, if you find a link which points to a specific article rather than a homepage, let us know that, too.

Peeking Inside Paul’s Computer: Christian Blog List

Okay, you need to be a Christian blog nerd to appreciate this, but I thought today I’d give you an inside look at my computer; specifically, all the Christian blogs that I have bookmarked there.  The blogroll you see in the right margin of Thinking Out Loud is just a small part of a bigger picture.  So here they are in no particular order, except that the first 40 or so are kinda on speed-dial — remember that Seinfeld episode? — and the bottom 40 or so have been added more recently. But otherwise, there’s no predictable pattern.  If you see anything here that’s not a blog, or a link that’s become corrupted, let me know. Also note that missing in this list are several blogs that I consider more as news sites, a handful of Patheos blogs, and also missing (because they’re in another directory) are about 30 blogs that do things similar to the Wednesday Link List. Have fun!

Mr. Driscoll, I Think You’re a Little Inconsistent

We can think ourselves so right at doctrine and yet get it so wrong when it comes to ethics. I’m glad this didn’t make the link list yesterday, because I really want you to read all of it; in fact I secretly wish I’d written it. This is from Dana at Upwrite, and the link will repeat at the end for you to comment there…

Over the last few days, I have read two lengthy articles by Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill in Seattle. One article was about yoga and the other about MMA fighting (both accessible on his website).  Essentially, Driscoll is addressing the question of Christian participation (whether actively or as spectator) in these two activities.

And all of it was ridiculous.

Okay, let me set forth my biases right away. I am not a Calvinist. I don’t dig Reformed theology. In fact, I find most of it abhorrent. I am more egalitarian than complementarian. I just am SO theologically opposite of Driscoll.

BUT…

I think he is a brilliant communicator, a theologically consistent preacher, and a remarkable leader. And I’ve subscribed to his podcasts for years.  One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Driscoll is his consistency. His theology is consistent (even when I hate it). His teaching is consistent. His work is consistent. And then he goes and writes two articles that are SO ridiculously inconsistent!  I’m seriously surprised and disappointed.

Basically, his argument goes like this:
Christians should not practice yoga because it is rooted in Eastern religion and the physical practice can’t be separated from its religious roots.

Christians are free to embrace MMA, even though it’s brutally violent and also rooted in Eastern philosophy/religion, because the physical sport can be separated from the religious roots and Jesus is the ultimate fighter.

Am I the only one that sees the problem with this?

Really, it’s just further evidence of Driscoll’s heavy-handed hypermasculinity. Is anyone shocked that he would “receive” MMA but “reject” yoga? I don’t care how about the injury rate compared to other sports, the strict rules, or anything else. At the end of the day, shame on us, as Christians, if we are at all entertained by bloody, brutal violence, whether in the ring, cage, or elsewhere!  Oh wait. My bad. Shame on us, as Christians, if we stretch, exercise, breathe and meditate.

~Dana

So what we’re gonna do here is close comments so that you can address this on her blog.  (Tell her we sent ya.)  BTW, MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts.  And so you know if you go to the blog, where she references WTF, that stands for the World Theological Federation.  Or something.

David Mainse Calls ALL Bloggers Liars

The following is a copy of a letter sent to Crossroads Christian Communications in reference to this interview David Mainse, founder of Crossroads Christian Communications (producers of Canada’s national daily Christian talk show, 100 Huntley Street) did with Jim Cantelon on January 3rd.

At the 10:48 mark (approx.) David refers to all blogs as “lies” and thereby calls me a liar in the process.

“You get on the blogs and the blogs are always lies.   Half truths are lies.    One of the reasons that gossip, backbiting, is in the same list in scripture as murder and adultery, of evils that have attached themselves to the human race, is because if you don’t have all the facts —  this is why you have editorial controls. [wanders off topic]  …But, there are checks and balances. That’s what an editorial board is in a newspaper.  Checks and balances. But on the blogs — I treat a blog just like I treat the rags that are on the check-out counter at the grocery store.  I don’t read them.  I refuse to read them. They are half truths. They have not been well researched. They have no editorial control. There’s no checks or balances on these so they are not reliable.   So I give the other side of the story. [returns to larger topic]”

We’re going to check with our lawyer on this one… There are some fine, upstanding people of integrity writing Christian blogs including MOST pastors.  Pastors who support Crossroads.  Pastors who are on the follow-up list for 100 Huntley Street.  Pastors David and Norma Jean have met with and dined with and interviewed as guests on 100 Huntley.  They have all been dismissed here without exception.  “The blogs are always lies.”  There is no way that anyone who has been on television as long as David Mainse would call someone a liar unless that was his full intention.  He did not leave room for any other possibilities.   It was a blanket statement, not a generalization.

I then provided a list of the posts I wrote about the relationship between David’s sons, and the man who conned them and others out of $14.1M last year and prior; and asked them to identify the “lies” contained therein.

A much longer piece about this, including a video embed of Mainse’s comments, and a fuller transcript of the interview, may be found at the blog to which we handed off this story, Bene Diction Blogs On. Bene, as he is known, stuck to the facts to such a degree that his articles were somewhat, if you don’t mind me saying so, boring. He was simply trying to assemble, as you lay out evidence on a very large table, a clear picture of what actually happened. We are very grateful for the efforts of Bene and affiliate writer Rick Hiebert for bringing the facts on breaking Christian news stories to the surface.

Burning the Ministry Candle at Both Ends

I can only remember one other time in my life when I was asked to do the Sunday morning teaching in a church for two consecutive Sundays.   The first went well, but then I had great difficulty having to put another one together in only six more days.

So — this is years ago back when The Message Bible was brand new — I simply read the Sermon on The Mount.   From The Message.  All three chapters.   Word-for-word.

Well, actually that would have been too easy.  I wrote a ten minute introduction.   Did some research.  And then I read all three chapters.

And the people laughed.   They weren’t laughing at me or the text; it’s just that laughter is a surprise emotion and the rather loose phrasing of this new translation was catching them totally off guard.   For all its critics, Eugene Peterson brought the sermon to life that morning.

Actually, better to say, it revealed the life that was already in the sermon.  The way the first century audience would have heard and understood it when Jesus gave it, assuming Matthew 5, 6 and 7 are somewhat verbatim, which I don’t actually think is the case.

In the meantime, I’ve got to give the second of two sermons on Sunday and I’m not simply going to read from The Message this time.   What’s that saying?  Oh yeah:  A pastor is a Bible college or seminary graduate who still has a term paper due every Friday.

So I’m late posting today.

But I have a new respect for pastors who also blog.

And do both faithfully.

time change*Daylight Saving Time 2010 ends Saturday night, or more correctly, Sunday morning, November 7th at 2 AM. One of my UK blogging friend tells me it ended over the pond last weekend. If you’re reading this on Sunday morning, it may be earlier than you think, so you can still make it to church!

Personal Confession

Here’s the dirt on Paul Wilkinson:  I’m a very boring person.   Although I think I can hold a “cocktail party style” conversation on a variety of topics with a variety of people, I’ve been, as Drew Marshall might say, “doin’ the Jesus thing” for a lot of years.   As conversant as I might try to be on a variety of subjects, I live and work in a world of Christian ministry.   So you can try to get me going on some things, but certain areas — import cars, domestic red wines, and just about any sport you can name — are going to be a wipeout.

As a result, I have a high regard for bloggers who are faith-focused, and little time for bloggers who ramble on about the latest tech gear, cute things their kids did this week, and pictures of their last vacation.  (The last issue having much to do with envy and covetousness.)

Anyway, that’s my confession.

It shouldn’t be.   I’m realizing that I need to cut loose and relax those standards a bit.   When Steve McCoy at Reformissionary talks about his favorite music, or Pete Wilson at Without Wax highlights those great parenting moments; these things are what make these pastors real and transparent.   I should be celebrating those blogs here.

What I am coming to be less tolerant of involves the very “faith-focused” blogs to which a few years ago I would have given the highest marks.   The problem is their passion has absolutely no relatability to their congregation.   They live in a world of doctrine, a world of theology, a world of acadæmia, a world of church leadership challenges, a world of church government issues.  Truth be told, I believe they are largely writing to other pastors, carrying on a professional conversation that will tide them over until the next conference.

Their congregational members must cringe when they read their blogs.  “Who is this guy?”  “How can he relate to what I’m going through?”

In fact, I’m not even sure I should be the one apologizing.   This blog, although somewhat narrow in its spiritual focus, at least cuts loose with some cartoons, some offbeat ‘religious’ news stories, some speculative “what if?” editorials.  Besides my family wouldn’t be all that interesting to most of you, and my hobbies are few and far between.

But by comparsion, maybe I’m not really the one who is boring.

So how’s life at your computer?  Does your pastor’s blog relate to you, or is he off in another universe? Who do you think has a good chance at the World Series this year?*
