Have you ever done this?
You’re a zillion miles from home and you’re walking through a mall or a downtown street and you’ve got your radar on to see if you see anyone you know.
You don’t know anyone.
It’s a given.
(Well, extremely unlikely.)
But you keep scanning anyway.
Just in case.
We’re human.
We’re social.
We long for connection to other people.
We’re wired that way.
Most of us.
Many years ago, on the last day of an extended trip through Europe, I was doing some shopping at a large department store in Paris, and I suddenly heard my name. I turned around, and there was an acquaintance from my college days in Virginia, someone I hadn’t seen in years.
Extremely unlikely, but stranger things have happened.
