Wednesday Link List

Not exactly Willow Tree, is it? A poster at Reddit described these three as his Grandma’s badass angel statues. (Left to right: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.)

This week’s list begins below, but we wanted to take a minute to provide you with some particular links — out of many that we looked at — for what was undoubtedly the Christian newsmaker of the week, Andy Savage.

The Iberian Lynx filling in for the semi-regular Wednesday List Lynx.

Now on to the balance of this week’s stories and opinion pieces.

That’s it for this week. Keep those cards and letters coming in folks; preferably by 6:00 PM on Monday. Speaking of the first day of the work week, the closing graphic is from Happy Monday at Clark Bunch’s blog.

  1. Thanks for keeping these types of important stories in the links. Please note “Next, here’s a full transcript of the remarks by Andy Savage to Highpoint Church on Sunday. (This gives also gives you a one-sided summary of the story.)” = bad link

    • Not sure why it didn’t work for you. Seems OK at this end. Maybe try again?

      • There is one line in the middle of the link list that doesn’t have a link in it at all.

      • It’s been a rough day for links. Some strangeness going on at this end with them as well, but with different ones. This never happened when Christianity Today was paying me to do this. Therefore, I blame them!

  2. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is the most famous Jonathan Edwards sermons. It’s the only thing many people know about him. But it casts him in a certain light (a guy breathing hell fire and damnation) that is simply not a good representation of who he was. That sermon is certainly not the only one we have in print. Edwards wrote all of his sermons out in long hand and there are many surviving texts today.

    • The writer’s point is that it was “most famous” but not “most important.” In his opinion.

  3. i found the juxtaposition of links very interesting. In my opinion, pastors like this https://scottmccown.com/2018/01/08/dear-hollywood/
are the reason we have victims like this

    • Interesting. I see where you’re going with this. I don’t mind the generalization, but the first link is a specific person and that makes it more difficult.

      • Yes it is a generalization – but this is the internet – no time for detailed analysis :)
IMO most of our sexual abuse problems in the church stem from 1) a patriarchal reading of creation and how God relates to humankind, 2) an obsession with sexual sin (with eve as the original temptress of men) , and 3) this weird idea that some men are anointed as leaders/pastors/prophets and that it is a life-time office (therefore all they have to do is outwardly repent like David in Psalm 51 and they are good to go). In general, that’s the way pastors in the Church of Christ operate

      • PS – I still think it is informative and helpful to have both links presented in your weekly list and I applaud you for doing so. I can not think of another Christian site that presents viewpoints from across the spectrum as you do!

  4. The Andy Savage story has been picked up by American main stream media. HLN posted a short video via Facebook just in the last 10 minutes. I haven’t seen it on t.v. yet but I’m expecting it now.
