Robert A. Schuller Resigns from Crystal Cathedral

All he wants for Christmas is a new church to pastor.   Robert A Schuller decided that retaining the title of pastor of the Crystal Cathedral without actually getting to do much in the way of preaching wasn’t exactly the makings of the perfect job description.   So this week he made it official, as this Los Angeles Times story details.

I missed this story when it broke earlier this week; but I woke up this morning at 4:00 AM and for some reason, the younger Robert Schuller was on my mind.   I kept thinking that perhaps somebody would offer him a new church to pastor.   A fresh start.  No family baggage.   No history.

I’m sure there are many churches who would be glad to have Robert A. as their pastor.   I’m not so sure how he would feel about leaving Southern California.   The climate does kind of grow on you.   Can he work a snow shovel?   I also wonder how he would feel about leaving the Reformed Church of America?   He’s not exactly America’s leading spokesperson for Calvinism; I’ll bet that could be up for grabs right now.

Or perhaps he could start something new.   He could find an area that is starving for a lack of churches; say Atlanta or the northwest suburbs of Chicago; and build something from scratch.   (Scratch, in this case being that he’d probably draw three thousand on the first Sunday.)

I just think that having fallen off the horse — or having been pushed off — he would get back on as soon as possible.   Because frankly, I think he deserves better… and I think he’s a pastor who has something valid to contribute.   But nobody said “pastor” was a synonym for job security or conflict-free work conditions.
