Narrative, Text Pornography: I Told You So

Filed under: pornography — Tags: , , , , , , — paulthinkingoutloud @ 9:20 am

I really do hate to say, “I told you so;” but if you’ve ever linked over to my online resource, The Pornography Effect,  or more recently read the summary of the book’s top 15 ideas; you’ll know that I am strongly trying to advance the concept that text-only pornography — in all its various forms — is just as insidious as photographic pornography.

So information on the sentencing of a man in Ottawa, Canada whose arrest was allegedly entirely on the basis of text files in a computer shouldn’t come as a surprise, but at the same time it should bring fear to anyone who is dabbling in that part of the pornography universe.

Note these details:

  • the files in question were all text-only stories involving children, adults and incest; no pictures were involved;
  • no downloading from the internet was involved; the man had composed most of the fictional stories himself;
  • there was no intention to copy or distribute the material;
  • the man did not own the computer in question;
  • the computer was not located in the man’s home.

Still, it’s child pornography, and for his literary efforts this man — a Jehovah’s Witness, married for 16 years — gets two weeks in jail, is banned from using the internet or owning any device that can connect to it, cannot have unsupervised contact with anyone under 18,  and lands a permanent spot in Canada’s sex offender registry.

Be careful little fingers what you type.

It turns out that the number one traffic post on this blog is one I didn’t write, and it’s number one by a large margin, with nothing else even close. So here, if you missed it, is the link: Thinking Out Loud – Top Post
